With Barnard rolling out stricter policies than Columbia in response to student organizing in the pro-Palestine movement, what does it mean for Barnard’s legacy of cultivating activism on campus?

With the subject line, “Care During Challenging Times,” Rosenbury sent an email at around 7:00 p.m. “to affirm two key aspects of Barnard’s mission and to provide more information about ongoing events and our plans for the future.”

Many professors marched from Low Steps to Milbank Hall to present demands to President Rosenbury and Dean Leslie Grinage.

The letter, released on April 22nd and signed by Barnard faculty who are members of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), ask for the dismissal of student suspensions and charges, among other demands.

According to organizers in the encampment, Columbia has revoked its statement that protestors would be suspended and arrested for pitching tents.

Danticat and Lahiri, award-winning authors and professors at Columbia University, urge President Rosenbury and President Shafik to revoke suspensions and drop disciplinary measures against students, and demand that academic freedom is upheld.

The representatives say that they worked under “extreme” circumstances and received minimal support from the College.

The responder, who remains anonymous, cites concerns about the arrest, suspension, and eviction of Barnard students.

On the fourth day of the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” dozens of Barnard students have reportedly been suspended and evicted, leaving them with no access to campus dorms, dining halls, or classrooms.
